A working student’s life

I finally have a taste of what it’s like to work and study at the same time. Life in advertising agency is crazy enough, but I wanted more madness. The adrenaline drives me to achieve even more.

Time passes by too quickly. I’m halfway through one of my modules, and the other module lasts for 2 weeks. It’s just started, but it will be over before I know it.

Never ruled out the fact that I will never have such an experience. Secretly it was something I want to try out.

What I’ve learnt in class has been really useful to my work.

4 more weeks to go.

Happy Lunar New Year! 新年快乐!羊年行大运!

Happy New Year!

WordPress upgrade

In case you haven’t realize,  I’ve upgraded my wordpress account to a paid one.

Nothing to be surprised about, the upgrade is to do digital experiments with backend and analytics.

A girlfriend once told me, I always seem so busy. I guess I tend to look for trouble, always looking for something to fix. Never ending.  More things to fix in the backend for this blog.

Chinese New Year is coming soon. It’s going to be a busy holiday.

Experiment with #AdWords

I have started on a new experiment over the past few days- using AdWords to promote my blog.

Yes, I do want more pageviews and visitors to my blog, but I am not expecting to use paid search to gain 1,000,000 PV and UV overnight. The purpose of using AdWords to promote my blog, is to get hands-on experience in Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

In the past, paid search marketing falls in the same category as SEO, but now paid search has a more defined role. And now we have SEO and SEM.

Reading about digital and social media is one way to learn. But hands-on experience will help you get insights, and makes understanding easier. (Perhaps I am just someone who needs practice to learn better.)

There are so many aspects of digital marketing, and Performance Marketing is one of them. I am interested to find out more about Performance Marketing, but I don’t see myself going down in that career path, as my interest still lies with content creation, the creative production side of it. (I am not saying people doing Performance Marketing are not creative! They need to be very creative to think of good and effective media strategies! Creative here is a noun.)

So in case you reside in Singapore, and happen to see banner ads of my blog when you conduct a search, please don’t be alarmed. This is part of my experiment and learning process.

#Thrive: Catching up with a good friend

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, WeChat, etc, all sorts of social platforms to help us stay in touch with friends. The irony of it all, technology helps to make it better, makes it easier for people to “talk” to one another, keep in touch without having to meet up. However, how often do you keep in touch with friends after parting ways?

I am glad to have met great people at workplace, and we become good friends.

One of the new year resolutions I’ve made this year, is to catch up with old friends. (Refer to this post.)

I love the personal touch and face to face interaction. I love to see the expression, the body language, which you can never get over text. One can hide some of the emotions behind a screen. (unless you do video-conferencing with your friends all the time, but that is quite unlikely.)

Though it was just a lunch appointment with this friend, but it brought me much positive feelings. It’s about learning from each other, sharing what we wouldn’t do in the digital world. This is social interaction at its best.

#Thrive: Pick your battles!

One thing about a good strategist is that you pick your battles wisely, after careful consideration and analysis. You don’t jump at everything and dive straight into it.

That is not to say you don’t take risks, but you have the guts to say, “Yes, I am fully aware of the risks, and I can bear the consequences of not getting what I want, after all the investments.”

A strategist must have a clear mind, to think, to dissect information, to make analysis, and to derive answers.

If you cannot differentiate what battles to fight, perhaps it’s time to take a step back, go for a break, clear your mind, talk to people. When your brain is not cluttered, you will think better.

#Thrive: Making a better tomorrow

The choice we make today, affects our tomorrow. If we want a better future, we need to work on it today.

You want to go to the Maldives for a holiday, you have to start saving now.

You want to lose weight, you have to stop snacking today.

You want to have a healthier lifestyle, you have to stop smoking now.

You want to become an author and publish a book, you have to start writing now.

Someone asked me today, why am I making myself so busy, killing all my weekends with lessons, readings and assignments, on top of a full time job. (FYI: This is for short term. It will be over in a couple of weeks.)

Because I am preparing for my tomorrow, a better tomorrow.

How Harper Lee Saved Me

To Kill a Mocking Bird was my literature text in secondary school. My classmates from Cedar Girls Secondary School will remember it.

It’s nice to read that Harper Lee replied to fan mails, as I always write to authors, producers, to thank them for their awesome content. It’s hard to get a reply, though it’s become easier with social media. Communications is now made easier, more convenient therefore more likely for a reply.

Looking forward to Harper Lee’s new novel!

Mob-Ex 2015

Just attended Mob-Ex 2015 with my boss, met some old friends, and made some new ones.

I was there as an observer, keeping track of who are the big winners on both the agency and client side.

Deep down in my heart, I was rooting for 2 teams. It’s been a long day, woke up at 4am and the dinner ended at 1030pm. I stayed on because I believe the 2 teams will win something, they did. Congratulations!
